(NaturalNews) GlaxoSmithKline, maker of the diabetes drug Avandia, knew the drug was linked to tens of thousands of heart attacks but went out of its way to hide this information from the public, says a report just released by the Senate Finance Committee. (http://finance.senate.gov/press/Gpr…)

This report also accuses the FDA of betraying the public trust, explaining that FDA bureaucrats intentionally dismissed safety concerns found by the agency’s own scientists.

The report says that Big Pharma’s drugs “put public safety at risk because the FDA has been too cozy with drug makers and has been regularly outmaneuvered by companies that have a financial interest in downplaying or under-exploring potential safety risks.” Sales of Avandia were $3.2 billion (yes, billion) in 2006.

According to a statistical analysis in the report, if all the diabetics currently taking Avandia were put on a “safer” drug, it would avert 500 heart attacks and 300 cases of heart failure every month in the United States alone. Presently, hundreds of thousands of Americans are still taking this drug, and hundreds will continue to die each month as a result, according to the report estimates.

This report, championed by U.S. Senators Grassley and Baucus, is the result of investigators pouring through more than 250,000 pages of documentation gathered from GlaxoSmithKline and the FDA. The document reveals some rather startling facts about the dangers of Avandia, including evidence from the FDA’s own scientists who concluded that Avandia was associated with 83,000 heart attacks.

heard from the radio this morning….in Britain they have almost perfected the formula and on trial with twice daily dose for Type 2 Diabetes.

It’s extra credit for my nutrition class, and I don’t know anyone with diabetes. I don’t need your name, I can just make up one. It can’t me a one word answer!!!

What type of diabetes do you have?
Any family history of the disease?
How long ago were you diagnosed with the disease?
How did you first find out that you had diabetes?
What symptoms do you have? (if any)
What do you do you have to do to control your diabetes? (eg. insulin, medication, exercise, diet)
How else does diabetes affect your day-to-day life?

It would be really helpful if someone could please answer these questions! I thank you in advance (:

I’m 120 lb overweight, I get short of breath just going up stairs and I’m a diabetic. I want to start exercising to lose all the weight, and eventually start running, but I can barely walk without being so out of breath I have to sit down.

Are there any low exursion exercises I can do as I build up my cardiac function to be able to handle more difficult things? I really want to be able to run, but if I tried to run, even for my life I would collapse in less than 100 feet. I want to get healthy and be able to not be out of breath all the time.

I also need to lose weight due to my diabetes. I was just diagnosed. Any suggestions? I’ve been put on an injectable medicine, Byetta and I’ve lost 15 lb since it helps me not be hungry all the time, but I think I will lose much much more if I exercise daily. I just want to make sure I am exercising safely.

I ran out of my glucophage, but i have some metformin here left over from before, is it ok to take metformin til i get my glucophage refilled?

I am type II diabetic and have been since 06. I struggle badly to control with diet. A1C was around 8. Doctors still seem to think I can control with diet. I dont take insulin. Why cant I just eat what I want and get on insulin and shoot up on it when I eat the wrong things. I basically eat fried crap, carbs, coke and fast food. I was on the SOBE diet but it was painful to give up sugar. It is like a drug. So can you control diabetes with insulin and only insuanlin

I am a diabetic taking metormin (1000mg) + glyburide (45mg) + Actos. and I fall asleep all the time almost right after eating. Can you tell me what is causing this? or what potentially causes this?

I found a list that said who could be at risk for diabetes, I was thinking I had it, but only one item on the list partly applies to me… I was so sure but how could it apply to me if I’m barely at risk?

I was diagnosed with PCOS in January of 2008- I was put on actos to regulate my period and combat my insulin and resistance- I got my first period since the diagnosis in april and had another in may (39 days later). I am do to go back to the gyno next month and I want to talk to her about trying to get pregnant. My boyfriend and I feel that we are ready and I’ve been off my birth control for 3 months. My question is do you think my doctor will be willing to help me with this or will she pursue me to wait do to my age (21) and the fact that I’m not married. I’m kind of scared to bring it up to her. Also I don’t want to start clomid unless its absolutely neccisary- we kind of want to try to do it on our own if possible. Any advice or input is greatly appreciated.

I noticed on the bottle it says no alcoholic drinks while taking the medication and i just wanted to make sure i can have a couple drinks with friends every now and again..

hi
for a uni report, i need to discuss the metabolic pathways involved in type 2 diabetes. i have so many books and websites telling me the symptoms of type 2 eg. insulin resistance but I cant figure out WHY this happens.

I think it has something to do with so much glucose in blood, and the insulin receptors down regulate or something but I cant quite figure it out. if someone could please explain to me why the insulin stops working that would be v helpful!
thanks

Why are doctors so often prescribing the newest drugs? My GP, who is over 80 now, always told me to never use the newest drugs on the market. He said let the drug companies use someone else to be their guinea pig to make a profit from. I remember once many years back going in with some illness that required antibiotics. He gave me ampicillan (sp). I mentioned that the cardiologist always prescribed a z-pack. My GP was not happy. And he also took me off Avandia to start me on glipicide instead (thank God) when the specialist had prescribed Avandia. He still converts me with verapimil instead of the newer drugs if the need arises. I think he is wise. As long as the older drugs work for me it is safer to take them because we know their long term side effects, pros and cons. So my question is– Why do so many younger doctors prescribe the newest drugs on the market? Please tell me it is not simply a financial motive that causes them to do that.
Mopar –> That was what cynical enough to wonder yet hoped wasn’t true. The more I read these question boards and see what people are taking and what procedures they are enduring, I just wonder, “Why in the world are they doing that?” I hope it isn’t merely for profit.
The fifth poster mentioned lasix. I have taken that for over 25+ years without K supplement. You don’t “have to” add one in all cases.
You know this topic goes further than meds. I slipped and broke my ankle 16 yrs back, went to ER, they called orthopedist who wanted to put in pins in surgery. By that time my family dr had come and convinced me a cast was a better option. I chose the cast.
Another example– I have always had a murmur. GP has always said it was functional not to worry. An OB heard it, and sent me to a cardiologist who did upteen tests. He came up with the conclusion it was functional not to worry. Why couldn’t the cardiologist have known that just by sound if the GP did? And the topic could be carried to other areas in medicine. Somehow, to the general public it looks like overtreatment, over prescribing expensive meds, and overtesting. I am glad to see that the doctors said it was not profit motivated. But it does appear that way to the general public.

I took my blood glucose three times in the span of five minutes and got the following readings: 78, 83, 78. These were taken out of three different fingers but with blood samples that were all comparably robuts. Is it normal for monitors to show this kind of vacillation, or is there something wrong with mine? (It’s a ReliOn ULTIMA, by the way.)
The word “robuts” above should be “robust” :)
