From my archives. This was made in 1991, but most of it is still valid. Thankfully, homosexuality is not included as a sexual disorder. Of note, influential sexologist John Money was gay positive, as you can hear in this documentary. He made a point of saying that homosexuality is natural and seen in many species. However, his reputation is blemished by the case of David Reimer, which received widespread international attention. Oprah even devoted an entire show to it. Money was a leading authority on gender identity. In fact, he coined the phrase, “gender roles.” To support his view that gender was mainly a cultural construct (that is, the way you are raised is more important than your physical sex), he wrote a lot on the case of David Reimer. Reimer’s penis was irreparably damaged in infancy because of a circumcision accident. After a lot of research, his parents decided to raise him as a girl. That included regular sessions with Dr. Money, who reported that Reimer was successfully reassigned to being female. The case was taught in colleges and conferences in support of Money’s theories. Unfortunately, the truth was more complicated and it was far from successful. Reimer reported years later that he never felt female — even though he never knew that he was born male. I used to watch this all the time in late middle school or early high school on PBS. I was considering becoming a psychology at the time. I realized what I really wanted was to be a veterinarian, but I still find psychology fascinating. Do you have any more episodes?
